The "Rubber" Dance

The "Rubber" Dance was performed for the first time by the Cultural Center "Jesus Angel Gonzalez Arias" in the Departmental Dance Contest in 1998. There the dance he won first place. The "Rubber" dance is danced by a couple and represents the process of the production of rubber.

The dance was created because of the importance of the rubber industry for this region, particularly in "El Doncello" town. This small place is the first producer of rubber in Colombia and provides of the highest percentage of this product to the national rubber industry. 

In 1999, the "Rubber" dance participated again in the Departmental Dance Contest but with some changes in the structure of the choreography, The cultural agents have developed a meticulous research process about the rubber industry in order to represent through the dance, the process and techniques of cultivation, the workers, the habits and and the relationship between the farmers and the rubber tree. The cultural agents supported this cultural proposal in order to encourage in the population the cultural popularity.

Among the main characteristics of this dance we find the following ones: it is danced in groups or couples, the costume of women and men were designed taking into account the influence of the Andean region and also includes the tools that the farmer uses for his work -processing rubber-. The dance is performed with a prepared scenery that shows the elements used in the process of cultivation and production of rubber. The woman plays the role of the rubber tree and the man represents the typical rubber farmer.
